Many think that Angelo Scola, Patriarch of Venice, is a prime candidate to become the next pope now that Pope John Paul II has been called back to the home office. But what are the odds that the white puff of smoke from the Vatican chimney will signal the first Venetian pope of the new millenium?
Check the odds here at a UK betting site called Paddypower.com.
At the top of the list as of this writing is Italian Dionigi Tettamanzi, who weighs in with brawny 11 to 4 odds. Our man, Angelo, find himself locked in a 6-way tie for 14th place with 20 to 1 odds.
Miracoli sono possible.
Norman -
Been away from the blog for a couple of weeks - on a honeymoon actually. However, at the ceremony our priest (family friend) surprised us with final blessing from the Cardinal Patriarch himself. My wife and I were quite shocked. Now I will tell her happily that her odds on having a blessing from the future Pope are 12 to 1.
Peace,
Kurt

Great question and another interesting tidbit - I have grown up and lived in the Catholic parish named after Guiseppe Sarto for 31 years. Not until I did some reading 3 years ago did I realize that St. (Pope)Pius X came from the Veneto! I have a life-long connection to Venice. Next summer I will be leading a dozen young people to Venice/Rome and Cologne for World Youth Day. Riese in the Veneto is on our list!
