The online version of La Nazione reports (in Italian) that the leaning, gorgeous campanile of the church of Santo Stefano, shown above in a driving rain, is in danger of collapse and is under the close eye of the Soprintendenza dei Beni Architettonici di Venezia, the city’s architectural watchdog. According to new measurements, not only has the degree of tilt increased by 6.1 centimeters over the last 60 years, but it also appears to be twisting as it leans. After the woozy campanile of the Church of the Greci in Castello, it’s the most Pisa-like of the Venetian towers.
Coincidentally, I mentioned this campanile in a post a few days back about Venetian earthquakes. It took a pounding in 1902 and had to be reinforced. Interestingly, that was the same year the campanile in San Marco collapsed.
