While we're on the topic of shoving things into slits in the wall in Venice, here's a unique contraption. It's an automatic video machine. Venice is the only place I've ever seen one of these things, though no doubt they exist elsewhere. This one is on the Fondamenta Santa Eufemia, and there's one in Campo Santo Stefano, too.
The weird thing is, behind the ATM-like interface is a regular store video store that never actually opens, as such. I've been inside a few times, on hot nights when the door is opened and people hang around chatting. There are two pleasant women who seem to run things. But the only way you could actually rent a video was through the contraption. Terribly modern.
And the student should understand that these loans can be quite overwhelming after they graduate and start out in life.
