It's been a little more than a year since I started the blog, and to my great joy, site traffic has climbed steadily and markedly. It's on-target reach over a half million hits annually, likely more, and this is something I find incredible ... especially since I have no site linking strategy at all, and virtually all my posts can be found on a single page. I'm not sure I know how you all found this place, but I'm so glad you did.
All signs are that those folks who wander in and poke around, stick around. I still hear from those first few emailers/commenters who discovered Veniceblog in October/November 2003. And every day there are new, always sunny, Veneziaphiles who drop a line or a comment ... these now number in the hundreds. I totally love it when people make suggestions ... they have resulted in some of the best posts. And the photos folks send me add a journalistic, of-the-moment feeling that really makes the site better.
I remember how I used to troll around the net looking for interesting Venice content, finding instead mostly a glut of tease sites that were fronts for hotels and tourist services, or mile wide/inch deep sites that aimed to be Everything Venice but end up being as satisfying as a meal of San Pellegrino and breadsticks. I couldn't find the site I was really looking for, so I had to make one up.
Help me make it better by emailing and commenting. I'd love to have guest bloggers chime in from time to time (Shannon?), so raise your hand.
And thanks ... this is fun.
